Natural Gas Supplier Enables SweetWater Brewing to Offset
CO2 Emissions from Natural Gas Usage
Stamford, Conn., March 1, 2007 – MxEnergy Inc. (MXenergy) announced today that Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewing Company has become the company’s first commercial customer to join its Earth Friendly Partnership, a program that enables homeowners and businesses to offset CO2 emissions from natural gas usage.
Under the partnership, MXenergy will cover half the cost of offsetting the microbrewery’s CO2 emissions from operations. SweetWater will pay one penny per therm of natural gas used in its facility.
“If all natural gas marketers and utilities in the United States followed our example, we could offset up to 46 percent of U.S. CO2 emissions,” said MXenergy President and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Mayer. “We hope that SweetWater is setting an example that many other Georgia businesses – and residents – will follow. We applaud what Freddy Bensch and his company are doing.”
The MXenergy Earth Friendly Partnership funds the planting of trees that naturally absorb harmful CO2 emissions and helps reduce effects of global warming. The program is available to all commercial and residential customers of MXenergy in Georgia.
According to company estimates, if all MXenergy customers went "carbon neutral," the environmental impact would be equivalent to removing 700,000 cars from the roads each year.
“It’s important for us at SweetWater to help protect the community in which we do business and live,” said Freddy Bensch, Big Kahuna of SweetWater Brewing Company. “We thank MXenergy for giving us the opportunity to help lessen the impact of our business on the environment.”
MXenergy is one of the fastest growing retail natural gas suppliers in the country, serving approximately 500,000 customers in 30 utility territories in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1999 to provide natural gas and electricity to consumers in deregulated energy markets, MXenergy helps residential customers and small and mid market business owners control their energy bills by providing both fixed and variable rate plans.
