Garún Icelandic Stout NR.19 brewed by Borg Brugghús in Iceland

Garún Icelandic Stout NR.19 brewed by Borg Brugghús in Iceland

Borg is led by brewer Valgeir Valgeirson. They are a small, dedicated and intensely beer-loving bunch. Valgeir was the original brewer at Olvisholt. GARUN is Borg’s 1st offering for export. At 11.5%, it’s an ‘Icelandic Stout’ which makes sense since it seems obvious that a stout coming from the land of fire and Ice would be, shall we say extremely stout! Intensely aromatic, full of roasted coffee notes, a very rich, almost unctuous body that finishes remarkably clean with just the right balance of bitter-sweetness. It reminds you as much of a coffee liqueur as beer. Remarkable! The ideal winter ale.

Garún Icelandic Stout NR.19 brewed by Borg Brugghús in Iceland

Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland's most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland's character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout.

Review from Beer Advocate:
Pours near black, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin, light brown head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet toasty dark malt, licorice, hints of dark dried fruit and chocolate. Flavor follows, with sweet dark toasted malt, dark chocolate, light molasses, lots of licorice, clove, unusually spicy for a stout. Finishes with a moderate hop bitterness and residual licorice. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A quite different take on a stout, with more light spicing flavors and less dark malt than usual. Although the licorice forward, it is very well balanced and the spice flavors complemented the overall taste. The ABV was well covered, very impressive as this one is quite warming otherwise. A flavorful and different stout that was very enjoyable. Good job.

History of Borg Brugghús and Brewery Egill Skallagrímsson
Egil Skallagrímsson is probably the single most famous Viking of all time. He was born in 910 and his parents soon saw that he was a person who would have a great impact on his country, though his parents were divided about whether it would be for good or evil. He was high-spirited, stubborn and not the most handsome of men. He left at a young age on many successful Viking voyages with his brother Thorolf, and when he returned to Iceland he was made chief.

Egil was a great lover of mead and there are many stories detailing his penchant for drinking. He always a appreciated a good nip of liquor, and would no doubt have liked the ambitious beers of Borg Brugghús. It is therefore appropriate that the brewery bears the name of this warrior and poet.

Brewery Egill Skallagrímsson was founded in 1913 and today employs many world-class champions and has won numerous awards for its beer. To allow the staff’s talents and creativity to flourish in full, it was decided that they would open Borg Brugghús, which intends to improve the beer culture in Iceland. It will offer a wide variety of beers which will be constantly evolving.
