Company by Morgan Forsyth, Craft Beer Promoter
Brewing Company was opened in April 2014 by Chairman David Lin and
Brewmaster Marks Lanham, both who had production brewing experience.
This past year has been a time of growth and challenge for the
brewery. They took a major literal hit but also managed to reach new
peaks, all which Comrade will celebrate during their three-year
anniversary this Saturday, April 22.
Since opening in April of 2014 Comrade Brewing quickly developed
a reputation for their hoppy offerings, particularly their flagship
American IPA Superpower. Due to the continuing high demand for
Superpower IPA the brewery added a new 30 barrel fermenter and 30
barrel brite tank dedicated to Superpower production alone. They
also added two new 15 barrel fermenters so that Comrade could sink
its teeth (or fill their glasses) with lagers. Increased IPA
production has allowed to the brewery to add new high volume
accounts like the Cherry Cricket, Curio Bar and Mercantile.
To help with increased production Comrade hired a new brewer one
year ago. Mike Durland claims his pedigree from Oskar Blues Brewery
and Avery Brewing Co. These brewery's philosophies were a good fit
for Comrade. so it’s no wonder Comrade has continued to receive some
pretty awesome medals for their beers in the last year alone. To
name a few:
Gold Medal at World Beer Cup in the Chili Beer category for
their Yellow Fever, a jalapeno citra blonde ale
North American Brewers Association Bronze Medal for their Yellow
North American Brewers Association Silver Medal for their
Comrade is also
know for winning back-to-back silver medals at the Great
American Beer Festival for their Wet Hop version of Superpower,
in 2014 and 2015.
The past year hasn’t been completely smooth sailing for Comrade.
In October of 2016 the front of the brewery was hit by a pickup
truck, which slammed into the brewery's 15 barrel JV Northwest
brewing platform and caused damage to the brewery's gas and
water lines as well as a load bearing beam. Comrade had to
suspend brewing operations for almost two months, but returned
triumphantly with their first ever triple dry hopped version of
Superpower IPA - and they named it More Dodge, Less Ram.
In celebration of their three year anniversary, Comrade will be
releasing their first ever Grapefruit Superpower IPA along with
vintages of the 2016 Quit Stalin, 2016 Kentucky Barrel Aged Quit
Stalin and Barrel Aged Vanilla Coffee Quit Stalin.
Even though Comrade has experienced change and growth over the
last three years many things have remained the same. Their
commitment to producing world class, balanced beers remains
intact, and then there's the fact that they have retained all of
the original employees since the brewery first opened. Patrons
have been greeted by the same smiling faces for three years!
Candace Peterson, Erica Faith, Michael Graff, Aly Malm and Ben
Hausmann. Adison Conway, the brewery's sales rep, began in
Comrade’s first year in September of 2014. Their taproom
manager, Nate Mayback, started a year and a half ago and brewer
Mike Durland started just before their two year anniversary.
