The Carolina Brewery Opens in Pittsboro(August 12) - North Carolina - The Carolina Brewery of Chapel Hill, NC fame opened their second location in Pittsboro on Monday the 6th of August. They already have five beers made on a Specific Mechanical 15bbl system and plan to have the same menu. There is already a coffee/merch. shop next door "TheHopshop" with growlers available. New Beer: Pow Pow Imperial IPA(August 11) - Colorado  - Our new beer is BIG... And, yes! It's bigger than our Powder Day IPA. It's all about BIG hops... Nearly 90 IBU's! That means: Tons of Hops for bitterness, Gobs of Hops for flavor, Pounds of Hops for aroma. It's also got a wonderfully BIG long-lasting, lingering hop bitterness in the taste. And yet, it's surprisingly smooth. In fact, it may be a bit too smooth for safety with it's huge 9.25% alcohol by volume. As such, it only available in draws. Website

Tallgrass Brewing is Kansas’ newest microbrewery(August 11) - Kansas - Founder and brewer Jeff Gill has worked diligently to get the brewery up and running and projects craft beer supplies to Manhattan and Topeka in late August.   The brewery’s flagship beer is Tallgrass Ale.  A dark chestnut-colored ale with a surprisingly light and extraordinarily smooth taste and clean finish.

Pagosa Brewing Wins Two Silver Medals at The North American Brewing Awards(August 11) - Colorado - Soaker's Stout and Wolf Creek Amber Wheat took home the silver.  Website

Hobsons Mild has won the Champion Beer of Britain competition(August 12) - UK - Hobsons Mild, a mere 3.2% ABV, has won the Champion Beer of Britain competition at the Great British Beer Festival. Mild, a tawny/red, lightly hopped beer style, has struggled for survival in recent years against both bitter, pale ale and lager but has been given a boost by the CBoB award.  Hobson's Brewery, founded in 1993, is a micro based in Shropshire, a county close to the border with Wales. Mild is brewed with Maris Otter pale malt, pale chocolate and crystal malts, and is hopped with Fuggles and Goldings. Units of bitterness are in the low 20s. Unusually, the brewing water or "liquor" is treated with sea salt, which brings out the roasted character of the darker malts.

Local brewery fills organic niche, beer drinkers' bellies(August 11) - California - Butte Creek Brewing Co. isn't your typical Joe-six-pack brewery. For starters, the small operation must assemble a team of workers within moments come bottling day—something Sean McClure heard from a buddy once. So he showed up to the brewery's front office on a Wednesday morning in July, signed a W-2, and joined other rag-tag walk-ins gathered on the bottling floor.  Complete Story

Yazoo bottles another popular brew (August 11) - Tennessee - Local brewery Yazoo has begun selling its hugely popular hefeweizen beer in bottles. Hefeweizen is a German-style beer made mostly from wheat. Yazoo Hefeweizen has something of a cult following around town; people like the creamy texture and banana and clove flavors.  Complete Story

Beer / Organic brews make headway
(August 10) - California - The organic label has been emblazoned on everything, from Pop-Tarts to paper towels, and even spirits, wine and beer. All beer was organic until Prohibition and the advent of modern industrial farming, when pesticides and other practices to increase yields started being applied to growing beer's main ingredients: barley and hops.

Beer of the Week

Summit Brewing Company - Summit Extra Pale Ale
Summit Extra Pale Ale is not a beer brewed only for beer snobs. Just the opposite. It’s a beer for everyone to enjoy: construction workers, stock brokers, farmers, sales people, clerks, teachers, lawyers, doctors, even other brewers. Its light bronze color and distinctly hoppy flavor have made it a favorite in the Upper Midwest ever since in 1986.

From RateBeer.com:
Amber colour with a thin white head. The aroma is full citrussy hops and somewhat faint malty. The flavor is strong american hops with a nice crisp clean bite to them and a bit maltyness in the background. The finish is bitter, but in a very pleasent way.
