Celebrating Zwanze Day at Bagby Beer Co. in Oceanside, CA

Bagby Beer Company in Oceanside, California by Nickie Peña, Craft Beer Promoter

San Diego County is home to more than 120 brewing locations, which makes it difficult to argue against a great selection of special events and locations featuring impressive craft beer lineups. Bagby Beer Company is among a small handful of spots that highlights offerings from both of these categories.

In October, the Oceanside, Calif.-based brewpub was chosen by Belgium’s Cantillon Brewery to host Zwanze Day for a third consecutive year. Attendees overtook the second story patio deck and indoor event space, while enjoying four highly coveted Cantillon sour ales. Although it’s unclear how beer bars are deemed worthy to host the annual release of Zwanze, Jeff explained feeling a sense of gratitude and honor for being one of 28 chosen bars in the U.S.

“I’ve spent a lot of time talking with Jean [Van Roy, Owner], and I have an extremely high level of respect for what they do,” said Jeff. “We do our best to honor their wishes for all that is Zwanze Day.”

The Bagby brewing reputation boasts a long tenure, going back nearly two decades and having previously worked with San Diego legends like Stone Brewing and Pizza Port Brewing. While serving as Director of Brewing Operations for the coastal-themed brewpub chain, Jeff created multiple award-winning beer recipes and even earned top honors as “Large Brewpub and Brewer of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival. When Jeff left his post at Pizza Port in 2012 to work on Bagby Beer Company with his business partner and wife Dande Bagby, the project had built up a lot of anticipation until opening in 2014.

It’s become more than a good beer experience. In addition to a well-done list of guest beers and craft cocktails, the house beers are developed by Jeff’s brewing talents and all produced on a 30-barrel brewing system found onsite. Both Bagby Beer Company owners oversee the restaurant side and all other business aspects, ranging from operations, staffing and new menu updates. Ultimately, craft beer enthusiasts and novices alike won’t struggle finding a beer on tap to please their palate, with beers ranging from an easy-drinking Kölsch to bold-flavored imperial IPA or bourbon barrel-aged old ale (See: Lion’s Pride).

“Diversity is very important to us,” explained director of pub operations Dande Bagby. “We are committed to doing our best to highlight awesome styles from all over the world in order to introduce beers to our guests who may not have ever heard of or tasted a particular style, and to honor the history and legacy of these styles.”
