When the
readers of the national website, Craftcans.com, picked their
favorite canned beers for 2011 Tallgrass was the top winner in 6
categories. Tallgrass's newest offering, Velvet Rooster got a double
win, getting top honors in "Belgian-style Ales" and "Best New Beer."
It was the only beer in the poll to win in two different categories.
"I am a little surprised." said Tallgrass Founder Jeff Gill. "There
are a lot of great beers in cans now from many new and exciting
breweries, as well as several older craft brands that are just now
beginning to can their beers."
Tallgrass's wins in the Craftcans.com's 2011 Readers Choice Poll:
Tallgrass Ale - Winner Brown Ale Category
Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat - Winner Wheat Beer Category
Velvet Rooster - Winner Belgian-style Ale Cetegory
Velvet Rooster - Winner Best New Beer Category
Oasis - Winner Double IPA/Imperial IPA Category
Buffalo Sweat - Second Place Stout Category
Tallgrass was also named as one of the most innovative breweries of
2011, because of its on going commitment to cans and its passion for
canning new and interesting brews.
"These are great honors for our little brewery. It means we have
earned the respect and appreciation of a very savvy group of beer
drinkers," said Gill, "In 2012 we plan to keep our fans happy. Our
goals are always the same. We want to get a little better every day
and continue to create and brew beers we would like to drink with
our best friends."
Russ Phillips and his brother, Kelly, started Craftcans.com to
promote the virtues of craft beer in cans and to end the stigma of
the can. This was the first year they polled their readers to
determine their favorites.
Phillips was not surprised by Tallgrass's showing in the poll. "I
think it's pretty fair to say that Tallgrass winning so many
categories is a testament to both the great relationship they
maintain with the folks who drink their beers and also the fact that
those beers are very well brewed," Phillips said. "I really respect
what they're doing and love that they canned the first Belgian
Tripel (Velvet Rooster) this past year. I'm looking forward to
seeing what they can next!"

Tallgrass Brewing Company was started in Manhattan, Kansas in 2007
by Jeff Gill and his wife Tricia. In May of 2010 Tallgrass declared
it's "Canifesto" and began packaging exclusively in cans.
Tallgrass's products include Ale, IPA, Buffalo Sweat Stout, Oasis,
Velvet Roostet, and Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat. Tallgrass is now
distributed in cans and on tap in 15 states.
