Sweet Josie Brown Ale Brewed by Lonerider Brewing Company

Sweet Josie Brown Ale Brewed by Lonerider Brewing Company in Raleigh, North Carolina

As strong-willed as she is seductive, Sweet Josie knows how to draw you in then bring you to your knees. This American brown ale is a complex beer balancing a nice hop bitterness with a generous amount of chocolate and aromatic malts. ABV: 6.1%. IBUs: 35

Review by Beer Advocate
Appearance - Sweet Josie pours a vintage burgundy color with ruby highlights and is topped by a creamy, ever-lasting pile of light khaki foam. Despite the fact my greasy nose accidentally touched the pile, this hasn't dissolved quickly at all. Thick lace clings to the glass pretty nicely.

Aroma - Sweet indeed! Sweet Josie is malt-forward with a deep complexity of light roast from toasted whole-grain bread to dry cocoa to a mildly roasted coffee bean. Nutty undertones and discrete dark fruits compliment some faint earthy hops nicely.

Taste - The aroma certainly carries some roast character to it, but far less than I was expecting to encounter in the flavor. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee grounds present themselves forcefully but remain balanced by sweetness and earthy hops so as not to become overbearing. Ever sip becomes more and more delicious, especially as vanilla notes enter as it warms!

Mouthfeel - Moderate carbonation cares not if it's overtaken by a robust, silky smooth body! With a lack of strong hopping, faint acrid bitterness really plays a key role in making sure this brown ale doesn't become too malty-sweet. Sexy, Sweet Josie finishes out with just a light lingering on the tongue, drawing you back for more.

Overall - Sweet Josie, offering a smooth, voluptuous body and excellent taste is one seductive brown ale, through and through. Roast notes push this beer towards porter borders while it's round sweetness and drinkability offers a nice balance. I'd kill for a few of these on a cool fall day!

About Lone Rider Brewing
“Effect change, don’t be an audience. Walk your own path, and instead of thinking outside the box imagine what if there was no box.” We opened our doors on January 23rd, 2009 with a beer and a dream. Today, Lonerider has 14 employees and is one of the CED’s 25 businesses to watch. With an eye for quality, we’ve crafted each of our beers with the highest quality ingredients. Two of our brews, Sweet Josie and Deadeye Jack, have taken home some of the highest honors from the Great American Beer Festival.

Over the years, we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of outlaws with an enthusiasm for craft beers. With such a tremendous variety out there, we can’t even to begin to express our gratitude to the community that’s supported us. We’re proud to be located in North Carolina, which has undoubtedly become the Southern State for beer.
Remember there is a Lonerider in all of us !
