Schellís Pils is a shining example of the true European Pilsner style beer. Brewed with 100 percent barley malt, where the Sterling Hop flavor is showcased. Its full hop characteristic and delicate aroma were developed in Pilsen, Bohemia around 1840. This style was widely copied by early American breweries. Over the years, however, it has been lost to the much lighter-bodied, low-hopped relatives.

In 1984, the August Schell Brewing Companyís President Ted Marti had the passion and vision to break away from the then popular image of beer in America. At that time, Americaís unique beers and breweries had all but disappeared, leaving only a few who mass-produced commodity beers with little or no character, tradition or culture worth mentioning. With a rich German heritage, Schellís introduction of a full-flavored, traditional Bavarian-style Pilsner was only the start of the breweries contribution to the craft beer revolution that stands stronger than ever today. Later that year, Ted introduced Schellís Weiss Beer followed by numerous other craft beer varieties over the years.
  

                        
The Schellís 30th Anniversary Pilsner Series consists of four different Pilsner beers. It includes the original recipe from 1984, Schellís contemporary Pils beer and two new innovative varieties made to help celebrate this historic occasion, a Roggen and Mandarina Pils. Schellís original Pils recipe is what the late beer aficionado Michael Jackson called ďOne of the best American examples of the Pilsner style.Ē It has a light maltiness, delicate noble hop aroma and a pleasant hop bitterness. Schellís contemporary Pils beer recipe has evolved over the past 30 years. Today it is brewed with 100% 2-row barley malt and is dry hopped with Sterling hops. It has a rich malt body accented by a large floral hop and malt aroma with a refreshing hop tang. The Roggen Pils is a twist on the traditional, featuring spicy rye malt coupled with spicy Tettnang and Smaragd hops from the Tettnang region of Germany. The fourth Pils variety showcases a new hop from Germany called Mandarina Bavaria. Its strong tangerine and citrus notes dominate the flavor and aroma.

The History of August Schell Brewery
In the fall of 1860, August Schell partnered up with Jacob Bernhardt, a former brewmaster at the Benzberg Brewery in St. Paul, MN (what today was known as the Minnesota Brewing Company). They erected a small brewery just two miles from town along the banks of the Cottonwood River. During their first year of operation they produced 200 barrels of beer, a very small amount based on todayís standards.

The location of the brewery was ideal. Aside from the beauty of its natural surroundings (August was especially fond of his hikes into the woods), the brewery was located next to an artesian spring, providing exceptionally pure water for brewing. Its proximity to the Cottonwood River gave the brewery a means of transporting beer and supplies, and the river also became essential to the refrigeration process. Each winter, large blocks of ice would be harvested and hauled up the hill where they would be stored in underground caves. The ice would keep the caves cool throughout the spring and early summer in order to allow proper aging and fermentation of the beer.
