Savannah Brown Ale brewed by Coastal Empire Beer Company

Savannah Brown Ale brewed by Coastal Empire Beer Company in Savannah, GA

Savannah Brown Ale is an American brown ale crafted with a rich malt flavor, balanced by a crisp hop finish. It has aromas of roasted nuts, chocolate, and citrus. The flavors start with a blend of chocolate, caramel, and roasted nuts and follow with a balance of resinous and citrusy hops. This beer pairs well with hearty dishes. Steaks, hamburgers, and sausage are all good choices, and the hoppiness of the beer makes it particularly well suited to be served alongside game dishes. The beer also stands up to strong cheeses such as sharp cheddar, gorgonzola, blue, and asiago. ABV:6.2%. IBUs: 55.

Beer Review from Beer Advocate

Poured a dark brown with reddish highlights and a creamy ivory head that leaves nice lacing as it fades. Nice Brown Ale aromas of roasted nuts, chocolate, caramel, and some nicely bitter hops. Flavors follows the nose nicely, lots of expected Brown Ale flavors of chocolate, coffee, and roasted nuts but again the finish is a nicely bitter blend of espresso and resinous hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall a very solid Brown Ale, I'm gonna re-visit this many times!

Coastal Empire Beer Company
Kevin Haborak has been home brewing since 1995 when he received my first homebrewing kit as a gift. From early on, he dreamed of opening a brewery. Back in 2009, his family moved from Atlanta to Savannah and that’s when everything finally got put into motion.

By the spring of 2010, Kevin had put together a skeletal plan of how to get things started and convinced his brother to invest in the dream. Then, he decided the first beer would be an American Brown Ale as a nod to my homebrewing roots, since this style was developed by American hombrewers as an adaption of the English Brown Ale. In February of 2011, he began producing test batches at Blue and Gray Brewing to scale up the recipe from 5 gallon batches to 600 gallon batches. By summer of 2011, he had perfected the recipe and set a date to bring the beer to market.

Coastal Empire Beer Co.’s Savannah Brown Ale was first shipped to Savannah Distributing on August 25, 2011 and launched the first night of the first Annual Savannah Craft Beer Week. The following Saturday Savannah Brown Ale took home first place in the People’s Choice Award at the Savannah Craft Brew Fest.

Since beginning as a contract brewery, Coastal Empire beers have won medals at the 2012 US Open Beer Championship, 2013 US Open Beer Championship, 2014 US Open Beer Championship, and at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival. The last medal was particularly sweet as we won it on the third beer that was brewed at new location in Savannah at the new production brewery.
