Maui's Brewing's
Black Pearl is their world famous Coconut Porter aged to perfection in
a Bruddah Kimo’s rum barrel (for a minimum of 90 days). This brew has rich
oak, rum, toasted coconut, and molasses flavors throughout. Bursting with
flavor. Smooth finish. This porter won the Gold Medel for barrel aged beers
at the 2009 U.S. Open Beer Championship. ABV: 6.5%+. IBU: 35. Hops: Cascade,
Tettanger.
Beer Review by
Beer Advocate
This barrel aged porter was tasted off island, and I was told this does not
actually exist, but I have been otherwise sworn to secrecy. Poured into a 10 oz
wine glass. No head with a little hazelnut colored foam around the edges. no
cloudiness. The color of a medium roast coffee (no cream). The nose on this beer
is incredible. just a nice slightly boozy coconut aroma, a little dark malts and
a cocoa-dark choco tinge to the edges. this should be sold right next to the
cans of coco-porter, could easily fetch $6-8/can. It just makes you feel like an
afternoon in a hammock. Plenty of rum on the palate without being too hot. The
woodiness balances well with the coconut. again the hazelnuts. a slight metallic
edge for a moment, but quickly moves to a long pleasant caramel macaroon finish.
The mouth feel is a little bit thin, but not off putting at all, I just would
like a bit more heft in this in the mouth. Really something one should search
out if there are on Maui. As little as I am interested in traveling to hawaii,
this certainly is a check mark on the "why the hell not?" side.
Maui Brewing Company
Maui Brewing is a truly local Hawaiian brewery, and proud to be wholly produced
in Hawaii. Recognized as Hawaii's #1 craft beer since 2005, the company has a
strong commitment to the local economy and the environment. MBC craft beers are
packaged with the most eco-friendly materials. Cans are manufactured on Oahu and
designed by local Maui artists; they have the added bonus of better protecting
the beer from both light and oxygen damage which can compromise the taste.
Plastic rings are dangerous to marine life and therefore, a unique, recyclable
plastic carrying device is used to hold the products. The spent grain from beer
production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting. Maui
Brewing Co. is also very active in several local Hawaii charities.
