Craft Brewery of the Day - Green Man Brewery in Asheville, NC

Green Man Brewery in Asheville, North Carolina  by Edwin Arnaudin

Beer lovers looking for someone to thank for helping transform downtown Asheville’s South Slope area into the center of the city’s bustling brewing industry may direct their appreciation to the good folks at Green Man Brewery.

Founded in 1997, up the hill in the still popular Jack of the Wood pub, Green Man shifted its home to Buxton Ave. eight years later, pouring offerings in the modest Dirty Jack’s tasting room. One of the few Asheville breweries with an ESB, the brewery also counts a Porter and IPA as its flagships and rolls out flavor-forward yet approachable seasonal ales throughout the year, such as Rambler Pale Ale in spring, Leaf Blower Red IPA in fall and Forester Stout in winter.

The colder months additionally bring the highly anticipated Dweller Imperial Stout and Holly King Barrel-aged Holiday Ale while warmer weather ushers in Green Man’s coveted sour beers. Without fail, enthusiasts line up around the block for bottles of the Willy Wonka themed Snozzberry, a blonde wheat sour ale that’s wild fermented and aged in oak barrels for a year, and Maceo, an imperial brown ale that spends 12 months in barrels with a plentiful amount of sweet Oregon cherries.

Dirty Jack’s remains a popular spot to enjoy these brews, but it’s tough to pass up a pint in the new adjoining Greenmansion. The three-story brewhouse and packaging hall features spectacular views from the top floor’s open air loft and serves as a testament to Green Man’s success.
