Gigantic Brewing Company; Doing Things Differently

Gigantic Brewing Company by Austin Foster, Craft Beer Promoter

Walking into Gigantic Brewing Company you can tell it’s a different kind of brewery than most. The beers are flowing, the regulars are chatting with the bartender who happens to be one of the owner’s wives, the colors are bright and in your face, and the artwork is out of this world.

Ben and Van started Gigantic Brewing Co. in 2012 after not knowing how they met, but knowing they wanted to start a brewery together. “I don’t remember meeting each other,” Said Van, “Ben just said we should start a brewery.” Two years after Ben said that to Van, they opened the doors to one of the most unique breweries in Portland.

This year, to keep up with their own trend of doing things differently, they released a seasonal line called the “Greatest Hits.” They don’t usually repeat seasonals but in honor of their fifth anniversary, they decided to bring back some of the favorites from the line up over the last five years.

One of the things that makes this place instantly feel different is the feeling you get when you walk in. Their regulars are there all night and chatting it up. You can tell there is a deep sense of community in everything that Gigantic does. Van said, “It’s rare when you can get them to have more than one of something other than an IPA.” The regulars are all about those hoppy brews that Van spends a good amount of time making along side their Head Brewer of four years, Scott Guckel.

If you live in Portland and you’re looking for a place to call home outside of home, swing by Gigantic Brewing and make yourself comfortable. Make sure to check out their artwork on the walls and their magazine, which takes the form of a comic book. This brewery will have you never wanting to leave.
