Hogwash Hickory-smoked
Brown Porter brewed by Fullsteam Brewery - Durham, North Carolina
Bacon
beer! We house-smoke malted barley over hickory wood, imparting a
sweet, subtle smoke to our hickory-smoked brown porter. Depending on
your comfort level with smoked beers, you may find Hogwash subtle or
overwhelming. Try it with North Carolina barbecue for some
smoke-on-smoke action, or go for the Trifecta of Awesome: bacon,
beer, and chocolate!
Beer Review by Beer Advocate
Another great Fullsteam beer that favors intrigue and nuance over
flash and intensity. Pours a common deep brown color with glimmers
of red shining through and a meager cap of foam on top. The aroma is
uncommon, however, with a smoothly-blended combination of smoke, a
bit of nuttiness, and a light malty sweetness. The flavor is even
more distinctive, with quite a bit of caramel sweetness being
consumed by a sweet, woodsy smokiness. The soft carbonation keeps
the flavors from becoming syrupy and helps the beer glide across the
tongue.
Overall, the flavor is certainly smoke-forward, but the "meatiness"
is delivered with a delicate touch rather than a heavy hand, which
takes this beer away from something that could come across as
gimmicky and instead makes it interesting yet highly drinkable.
Fullsteam Brewery
In the past few years, North Carolina’s beer selection has
flourished with beers around the world: Belgian dubbels, tripels,
and quads; English bitters and barleywine, German lagers. Amazing
craft beer from US breweries establishing regional traditions and
styles: the West Coast IPA phenomenon. Hearty Wisconsin lagers.
Experimental beers from the Northeast.
But we have yet to develop a Southern craft beer identity.
Fullsteam’s mission is to craft this identity. To create a
distinctly Southern beer style that celebrates the culinary and
agricultural heritage of the South.

two beer lobbying organizations that have opened up economic markets
to North Carolina’s craft beer industry. He holds both an MBA and
Master of Public Policy from Duke University. Sean has ten years
restaurant experience, including three years at Durham’s renowned
Magnolia Grill.
