Frecle Belly India Pale Ale brewed by the Back Forty Beer Company - Gadsden Alabama
Frecle Belly India Pale Ale is a full-bodied India Pale Ale. This IPA is
loaded with fresh hops for a powerful blend of citrus, pine and fruit
aromas. The firm malt backbone works well with the bold hop finish that
everyone expects from an IPA. Belly up hop heads! Brewed with Amarillo,
Apollo, Cascade, Citra & Columbus hops and Crystal & Special Roast malts.
ABV: 7.5%. IBUs: 65.
Beer Review by Beer
Appearance: clear honey colored. White and frothy head. Thick messy lacing. A
Aroma: Five types of hops and it pays off. Pine, fruit, and citrus. Redolent
hops and nicely balanced with the malts.
Taste: Much like the nose while just falling short of measuring up to it.
Nevertheless, a standout.
Overall: My first Back 40 beer. Tried it mostly because their "right up the
road". Also I gotta admit I'm a little weary of the zillion ipa's poppin up
everywhere. This was a very pleasant surprise.
Back Forty Beer
Jason Wilson and Zach Folmar were originally inspired with the idea of Back
Forty Beer Company in 2003 while visiting family in the small ski town of
Crested Butte, CO. While dining out one evening, the two men struck up a
conversation with the Master Brewer at the town’s local brewpub. The
conversation quickly moved to the back of the Brew house and lasted well into
the early hours of the morning. They left the pub that evening with a vision of
bringing great craft beer back to the state of Alabama.
In 2007, after years of developing the concept, the duo enlisted the services of
Montgomery, Alabama resident Jamie Ray as Brewmaster for the operation. Jamie
brings with him over twenty years of experience in the brewing profession,
including several medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO.
Jamie immediately began working on a series of test recipe’s that would
eventually become the craft beers that you see on the shelf today under the Back
Forty name. Jamie has over 200 recipes in his range, which means Back Forty will
be able to continuously release innovative and creative beers for a long time to
In 2008, Back Forty began working with the Mindvolt Agency in Athens, AL on
label and packaging designs for the release of their debut offering, Naked Pig
Pale Ale. Mindvolt continues to be the exclusive designer of Back Forty Beer
Company’s artwork and web space.
In March of 2009 Back Forty Beer Company was founded in Birmingham, AL, with the
assistance of David Carn. David is a great friend of the founders and practicing
attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz in Birmingham, AL.
In April of 2009, a deal was reached with the Alabama Budweiser network for
statewide distribution of Back Forty’s products. This resulted in the creation
of Alabama’s only craft brewery with distribution throughout the state.
After several months were spent obtaining licenses and permits, Back Forty Beer
Company offered its first public samples of Naked Pig Pale Ale at the Magic City
Brewfest in Birmingham, AL. This date was also significant, as it was the first
time craft beer that exceeded 6% alcohol was allowed to be sold in Alabama.
The beers were initially brewed exclusively at Lazy Magnolia Brewery in Kiln,
MS, while Back Forty selected a site and equipment for their permanent facility
and should be in operations shortly.
From the beginning, the Back Forty team had been amazed by the positive impact
that micro breweries have on their communities. And having grown up in a blue
collar town that was chewed up and spit out by the industrial revolution, it
didn’t take long for Wilson to settle on Gadsden as the permanent home for Back
Forty Beer Company.
Back Forty secured a 27,000 Sq. Ft. warehouse that was built in the 1940’s, and
Back Forty’s four employees spent eleven months working themselves and with
contractors restoring the space and installing equipment. This included working
through dozens of regulations and restrictions that have been in place in the
Deep South since the repeal of prohibition.
Production Begins in 2012
After ten years of countless challenges and the overwhelming support of the
Gadsden community, Back Forty brewed its first production batch of beer at its
new home in January of 2012. This also marked the release of two new Back Forty
offerings, Freckle Belly IPA and Kudzu Porter.
By March of 2012 Back Forty had received distribution offers from as far away as
California & New York and demand was exceeding the ability to keep up.
Back Forty Today
Back Forty now employs 20 talented individuals from all over the country. Since
January 2012 capacity has tripled at the brewery. And last year (2012) Back
Forty donated over $10,000 to local charities while strengthening the network of
artists and dreamers who are changing the cultural landscape in The Deep South.
