Jubeale - A Festive Winter Ale by Deschutes Brewery - Bend, Oregon

Jubelale Brewed by Deschutes Brewery - Bend, Oregon

Let the Festivities Begin: Jubelale Is Here! The artistry of this Bend, Oregon craft brewery’s Festive Winter Ale has hit the shelves. Jubelale, the first beer ever bottled by Deschutes Brewery, epitomizes the season with a big malty, spicy, sweetness,an assertive hop presence, and a welcome, warming alcohol temperament. A new regional artist is commissioned every year to create an original work of art, inspired by Jubelale, to be transformed into label and packaging art.

The collaborative art of Central Oregon artists Cara Thayer and Louie Van Patten adorns the label in 2011. Their work explores a ‘painted dialogue of human forms.’ They focus specifically on the hand and how it illustrates the human condition. The artists wanted to capture the essence of Jubelale from within this framework.

Cara Thayer reveals, “We wanted to create something for the outside of the bottle that was as artful as what is
inside. Our goal was to do something that had a sense of action, along with creating a playful image. The beer
itself was hugely inspirational for the painting, as craft beer is an art that we respect. For us, drinking Jubelale
every winter is a memorable highlight of the season.”

Thayer also explained that the hand-knitted mitten and scarf reflect the handcrafted character of Jubelale,
while the snowball in motion evokes the fleeting nature of winter. Memorable works of art, like Jubelale, offer fitting tribute to any seasonal gathering one might attend. Distinctive flavors establish Jubelale as the ultimate luxury to share with friends and family.

Beer Review from Beer Advocate:
Appearance - Mahogany colored brew with decent clarity and medium carbonation. It produced a fluffy off white 2-finger head that held very well. It left very nice lacing on my glass.

Aroma - I get lots of brown sugar, vanilla undertones and soft ginger. A bit of cinnamon in there as well with leafy/herbal hop characteristics. The soft ginger and cinnamon work so well in the aroma. It's very inviting.

Taste - It's got a nice brown sugar flavor upfront, an almond like note quickly follows. It unfolds into nuttiness, cinnamon, allspice, and subtle vanilla. It finishes with a bright, palate cleansing herbal hop flavor that washes away the warming spice and malt flavors. Bitterness is low but balancing, and it's noticeable dry as well. The herbal hop character seems to get a little stronger as it warms.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with a bit of a smooth feel and medium crispness.

Overall - Wow, this is a very nice beer. The aroma is soft and inviting to me, and the flavor profile is wonderful with that subtle vanilla and cinnamon. The beer even looks tasty! I definitely recommend this one to anyone who likes maltier brews.

Deschutes Brewery
Located in beautiful Bend, Oregon, Deschutes Brewery is in the business of daring people to expect more from their beer. That's why we started off in 1988, on the banks of the Deschutes River here in Bend, Oregon, by selling Black Butte Porter at a time when others were sure a dark beer would never catch on. Our brewers love to push the envelope, especially if it makes someone nervous. But for us, the highest praise is a raised glass and a toast of "Bravely Done!"
