Southern Illinois University Adds Major in Brewing
Amid Craft Beer Boom(May 1) - An Illinois
university has a new accredited degree in
fermentation science to train future brewers,
distillers and vintners. The state Board of Higher
Education approved Southern Illinois University's
new Bachelor of Science degree in March, The
(Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reported.

Western Kentucky University Brewery Slide Show(May
1) - Dr. Pearse Lyons, founder and president of
Alltech dedicated the College Heights Brewing Monday
in a ceremony at the WKU Center for Research and
Development. The fully operational brewery will help
support new undergraduate and graduate certificates
in Brewing and Distilling Arts and Sciences, set to
begin this summer.
Pennsylvania College of Technology Approves Brewing
and Fermentation Science Program(April 29) -
Pennsylvania College of Technology in a few years
could be graduating students with an associate's
degree in brewing beer. The board of the Penn State
affiliate Thursday approved a new two-year program
called Brewing and Fermentation Science. The
earliest the two-year program could be offered is
the fall of 2017.
Beer 101: College chemistry course on 'The Chemistry
of Beer'(April 28) - College of St.
Scholastica's "The Chemistry of Beer'' classs filled
10 minutes after registration opened. And this week
the 24 students in Professor Aileen Beard's class
bottled the fruits of their semester efforts, the
fruit of the fermentation of hops and grain.
Metro State in Denver expands beer program with
Tivoli Brewing - The Tivoli Brewery sits in the
middle of the Auraria campus. For 100 years, it
served as a focal point of the Colorado beer
industry, but it was shut down around 50 years ago.
Construction is underway to revive the brewery and
make it part of the MSU Denver program.
Mt. Pleasant craft beer fest to feature Central
Michigan University brews(April 25) - Beers
brewed through Central Michigan University's unique
student fermentation program, known as CMU ferms,
will be available under the label of Hunter's
brewery. "It's the first time we've ever had
anything like this in the state," said Hunter.
"Since we've had the students' beer, it's been
amazing. They have just had some outstanding
progress with that."
CSU brewing class to tap artisanal French ale 'Bière
de Garde'(April 19) - This semester, the CSU
Brewing Science and Technology class brewed a
variation on a traditional Bière de Garde artisanal
ale from Northern France. The ale is typically
brewed in early spring and kept in cold cellars for
consumption in warmer weather.

year, Niagara College's brewmaster and brewery
management operations program was the result of two
years of planning by Steve Gill, the college's
general manager, and Jon Downing, whose career in
beer spans three decades. Downing has helped open
