Appearance: Hazy pale yellow/lemon/chicken broth. Head is bright-white,
bubbly, and small. Notches of lacing cling to the glass. Head drops to a thin
cap in rather short order.
Smell: Belgian spice. Touches of lemon, clove, and banana. Some mild touches of
citrus back everything up. Big yeasty touch. Malts are pale and mellow, offering
just a faint backbone. Very clean. Almost treads on witbier territory.
Bubblegum. Floral and estery.
Taste: Light, pale malts backed by a mellow Belgian yeast influence. Notes of
clove and pepper play with ripe banana and touches of bubblegum. The flavors
thrown by the yeast are tempered by a solid citrus component. The hops are big
enough to assert themselves between the mellow malt base and the Belgian esters.
Mouthfeel: Relatively light with a solid carbonation. Has a slight drying
bitterness on the edge of each sip.
Overall: As would be expected from Deschutes, this is an amazing piece of
balance. Nice touch of spice and hops. Balance and more balance. That's what
they do.
Deschutes Brewery
Located in beautiful Bend, Oregon, Deschutes Brewery is in the business of
daring people to expect more from their beer. That's why we started off in 1988,
on the banks of the Deschutes River here in Bend, Oregon, by selling Black Butte
Porter at a time when others were sure a dark beer would never catch on. Our
brewers love to push the envelope, especially if it makes someone nervous. But
for us, the highest praise is a raised glass and a toast of "Bravely Done!" For
