Expedition Stout
brewed by Bell's Brewery - Kalamazoo, Michigan
One of
the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United
States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted
specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will
continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is
matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other
aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will
slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.
Beer Review by
Beer Advocate
Appearance: Dark, brooding black. A generous pour yields a killer
2.25 finger cascading mocha head. The retention is top notch, as is
the lacing which rims the glass.
Aroma: Dried and candied dark fruits with just a touch of smoke.
Taste: Really a massive dose of char up front. Yeah, this is aging
beautifully. Though it's rather roasty, there's still a solid hop
kick on the mid, even after it's been in the cellar for a year.
Black coffee runs from the mid to finish, and it lingers for some
time.
Mouthfeel: Just over the top. It's silky, creamy and velvety. It
feels like a penthouse suite in mouth.
Overall: Bell's Expedition Stout is easily one of my favorite non-BA
RIS's. It's big, bold and brash, yet deceivingly elegant and easy to
drink. This has aging potential unlike many others. Though a bit
pricey, it's worth every cent you'll pay.

Bell's Brewery
Bell's Brewery, Inc. began in 1985 with a quest for better beer and
a 15 gallon soup kettle. Since then, we've grown into a regional
craft brewery that employs more than 100 people over an 18 state
area. The dedication to brewing flavorful, unfiltered, quality craft
beers that started in 1985 is still with us today. We currently brew
over 20 beers for distribution as well as many other small batch
beers that are served at our pub in Kalamazoo. Our ongoing goal is
to brew thoughtfully, creatively and artistically. We strive to
bring an authentic and pleasant experience to all of our customers
through our unique ales and beers.
The Eccentric Cafe
On June 11, 1993, Bell's Brewery, Inc. became the first Michigan
brewery to serve beer by the glass to the public. The Eccentric Cafe
offers customers a chance to taste many of our well known beers, as
well as small batch brews that are not distributed outside of the
pub. Visitors enjoy its warm atmosphere and spacious beer garden.
The Eccentric Cafe also features interesting food, an extensive
collection of art and ephemera, and live music Thursdays through
Saturdays. The Eccentric Cafe's entertainment schedule can be found
here or by calling 269-382-2332.
The Eccentric Cafe underwent a significant expansion and officially
reopened March 28, 2011. The core of the $3 million project is a
new, dedicated music venue in what used to be a warehouse and now
hosts musicians from across the country. Eight additional tap
handles were added, bringing our current draft selection to 20. The
restrooms were expanded and additional seating options were also
part of the renovations in addition to a transformed Beer Garden,
new patio and a new entry way.
