Apocalypse IPA brewed by 10 Barrel Brewing - Bend, Oregon
Apocalypse IPA is a northwest American style IPA. The color comes through as
a deep gold with orange hues. Fruity and citrusy hop aroma shines, with
hints of pine resin. The four hop flavor dominates, re-enforcing the aroma
with more citrus, fruity and piney notes. The malt character is clean and
smooth with a unique toasted flavor (thanks to the generous helping of
Victory malt), all held together by a firm bitterness. Apocalypse has a
medium-bodied mouth feel, finishing crisp and dry. All of this results in a
very drinkable IPA. Malts: 2-row Pale, Victory, Crystal. Hops: Horizon,
Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade. ABV: 6.5%. IBU’s: 65.
Beer Review by Beer Advocate:
Deep murky ruby tinted boy with a pink colored head forming thick, 500ml bottle
this could be a whole lot of fruit beer. Fine even lacing dispersed nicely,
aroma is full of tart raspberries and fruit jam with an earthy seed based
accent. Light airy fruit with tart perfume like notes of raspberry fruit, a very
nice smelling beer. Flavor wise it's extremely tart bordering sour, finishes dry
after the fruit sugars subside with the sweetness. Much like fermented fruit
juice, in this case tart raspberries. A bit of lactic yogurt like flavors
amongst the fruit and malt interplay absolutely no hop profile to speak of. Dry
finish, body has sturdy champagne like carbonation, medium bodied a bit cloying.
Overall a very drinkable fruit ale, I don't find many out there, but this one is
enjoyable natural fruit flavors provide for a nice beer experience.
History of 10 Barrel Brewing
Long-time fans will remember that 10 Barrel Brewing started out in 2007 under
the name of Wildfire Brewing, the venture of brothers Chris and Jeremy Cox who
owned and ran JC's Bar and Grill in downtown Bend at the time. The name change
didn't hurt things one bit and 10 Barrel's popularity has exploded (and
continues to do so), so much so that they renovated and opened their west side
Pub in 2010, and completed a brand-new 50-barrel brewery at the beginning of
this year.
The recent additions of big-name brewers Jimmy Seifrit (from Deschutes Brewery),
Tonya Cornett (of Bend Brewing), and Shawn Kelso (of Baker City's Barley Brown's
Brewpub) promise lots of interesting things to be coming out of their
brewery---and for a craft brewery whose beers are already insanely popular,
that's saying something. (Courtesy of Central Oregon Beer Week)
